SPIRITUAL FACILITATION
In the middle of the journey of our life I found myself within a dark woods where the straight way was lost.
― Dante Alighieri, Inferno
The Nature of the Work and the Role of the Facilitator
The role of a spiritual facilitator is to be a non-judgmental, supportive witness to the creation process/experience that is unfolding in your life. It is not to change you, but to skillfully encourage that process of awareness through such methods as gestalt, mindfulness practices, and by encouraging you to pay attention to breath, to movement, to sensations in the body-feeling state, to emotions, to thoughts, and to images – in short, to become conscious. The facilitator is there to help you liberate your highest, best wisdom so that you can make good choices. You are the person responsible for the consequences of your actions. This process is especially beneficial when you are negotiating life’s transitions and challenges, or when your conventional ways of being in the world don’t work anymore.
It is spiritual but I will not outline a specific spiritual path for you or define how you should be. Spiritual growth facilitation is designed for individuals who are willing to take full responsibility for their own choices and spiritual development. It is not intended to be a substitute for psychotherapy. When mental illness is suspected or has been diagnosed, a trained psychotherapist/psychiatrist is recommended.
In my role of facilitator, I use secular mindfulness practices and various tools from Gestalt philosophy, the Enneagram, and Jungian dream concepts, among others.
